Move a Complete Cemetery to Another County

Hello All Coordinators -

Until now, when a cemetery was created in an incorrect county, it was a huge job to move the submitted photos to the correct county.

Now, thanks so some marvelous work by another volunteer, Robert, the administrator now has a utility which can move a complete cemetery from one county to another very quickly.

Thanks, soooooo much, Robert!!

New Cemeteries Bill in Ontario

Below is a copy of a message received by me from the Quinte Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.
Please contact your Ontario MPP to request his support for Bill 126 asap!!
We need protection for our cemeteries as each year one or more get bulldozed in the name of progress!
Please pass this on to ANY genealogists in your address book.
Thanks,
Jim

Tues. Nov. 2, Bill 126, an act to preserve all Ontario's Cemeteries, including Heritage and Pioneer Cemeteries was introduced by MPP Jim Brownell, and passed First Reading.
The previous similar Bill which passed two readings was lost when the House was perouged last Spring.  Let's get behind this  and try to get it pushed through quickly, before it too gets lost.
Saturday at the Exec workshop we were told that it was coming up on Tuesday and if it passed, we were requested to immediately flood our MPP's e-mail boxes etc. to show support.  Volume counts!  Apparently this will help keep this Bill at the top of the list, when the house is sitting.
Petitions are good, however it is the volume of individual letters, and/or emails, of support that get the most attention.

To see the bill go to the following website and scroll down until you find Bill 126
I hope you will all help to spread the word!

PHP Programmer Needed

We need the assistance of someone capable of amending the existing php code for CanadianHeadstones.com as there are a number of small changes on our wishlist.

If you know of anyone who may be willing to volunteer a little time, we would be very appreciative.

Thanks, Jim

Finding a Cemetery

I have been asked, "How do I find a cemetery when I don't know the county, district or region?"

Well, it really is quite simple! Just go to the province or territory, click on Search; under Custom Search, leave the default Find Records Within All Province/Territory; change Where The to Cemetery; then use either Starts With or Contains; then type in part of the cemetery name.

This will search the whole province for your request,

Good Luck!

!! Question Marks & Brackets Are OK !!

! Mia Culpa !  ! Mia Culpa ! Well, I did it again! Only this time, it is a BIG mistake!

When I set up CanadianHeadstones.com, I was advised to not allow brackets and question marks as it created search engine problems. Well, thanks to my friend, Michel in Quebec, we have learned that question marks and brackets do NOT create any problems for our search engine at all.

In fact, it appears that one single question mark is much preferred to using ``Unknown`` in place of an unclear name.

Brackets, also, create no problem. However, please reserve the [ square brackets ] for information added by the submitter and not actually on the headstone.

For further details, please see the Help & FAQ page.

My apologies for leading everyone astray!

Quebec Quietly Creeps past 30,000 Records

Congratulations to the whole team in La Belle Province - Quebec!

While I wasn't watching, they surpassed the 30,000 records mark!

A great achievement by a relatively small group led by our wonderful coordinator, Michel. He has single-handedly provided all of the French translations for Quebec and New Brunswick on top of approving all of those 30,000 entries.

Great Job, Well Done by All!

Translation Help Needed

Hi Everyone - from time to time, submitters run into a foreign language headstone which they need assistance translating to ensure the accuracy of the indexed names. At the moment, we have a Polish language headstone needing some help.

I would like to create a Volunteer Translator List for my personal use - not to be published on the website.

If you can assist with any foreign language, please drop me a line.

All the best,
Jim McKane, Administrator

PS - we have a French volunteer already!

Recruit a Friend Challenge

All of us know that the success of CanadianHeadstones.com has been through everyone volunteering their time and efforts to take photos, submit them and many of us are acting as coordinators to approve the entries.

In our efforts to continue our growth, I would like to challenge every volunteer to recruit at least one of your genealogy/family history friends to submit photos as well.

Just think of the growth if we had double the number of volunteers!

Good Luck, Everyone!

Why CanadianHeadstones.com & not XYZ Project?

Over the last year, I have received many email like this one which came yesterday........

Jim, I am very interested in your program and also have a question. I have found a program "[website] Cemetery Project" and I know they are working in [XYZ] Cemetery here in [my town] doing the same type of work as I have seen pictures of my parents stone. Is there duplication of work being done or do each of you provide different information? I really like the way your project lists what is on the stone as sometimes they are difficult to read.
[website] just shows a picture of the stone. Also, being able to contact [coordinator] was much more personal. [website]'s date of death for my grandmother is out by 10 years. I emailed them quite some time ago and never heard back.
Can you tell me what is involved in helping with the project here in [my town]? I have a digital camera and am recently retired and looking for something to do. Other than that what other skills do I need?

This was my reply to the above email which I sent out a few minutes ago..........

Hi [name withheld] - There are a number of different cemetery projects on the go across Canada. They are "doing their own thing" but don't have the same attributes as our project. First you have to find the website which usually only contains a few cemeteries. Then, normally, you not only need to know the county but also the cemetery before you will find your ancestor and very few of these sites contain the transcript.

To date, I have not seen any other projects with the powerful functions similar to those of CanadianHeadstones.com

We have the easiest method of submitting the photos and creating the database. We have transcriptions for every headstone. BUT more importantly, you can search our database by province, county or cemetery looking in either the surname, firstname, cemetery, or comments/transcription fields where the field starts with, contains or sounds like the search phrase. This powerful search engine makes your quest so much easier.

Becoming involved is extremely easy! The best place to begin is reading our Help & FAQ page which contains tonnes of tips and answers on many questions. Then, I recommend setting your camera to a much lower resolution than you normally use. I would suggest using a resolution setting not higher than 1200 pixels X whatever. This gives you a clear photo which will not require resizing before submitting.

Otherwise, please type directly to myself or [coordinator] with any questions.

Thanks so much for your support AND Welcome Aboard,
Jim McKane

Amazing Progress!

Exactly one month ago today, I wrote congratulating everyone on reaching 75,000 records.

Today, the total is 90,000 records !!!
That's 15,000 records in one month.

CanadianHeadstones.com has the most diligent volunteers of any project I have ever seen.

Thanks everyone!

Mystery Date Question

I have had a query trying to find the meaning of E. M. in this transcription from a headstone -

Born Feb. 9, E. M. 344
Died May 18, E. M. 408

It seems that the person was born in 1844 and died in 1908 which means the E. M. = 1500
However, the question is what do the letters stand for??
I would appreciate any suggestions. Please email Jim McKane
Thanks

Changing Your Email Address?

I have been asked, "I have changed my email but I still wish to receive queries from the photos which I submitted to CanadianHeadstones.com. Can you amend my email address for me"

YES! YES!

However, it is a function that only the administrator can perform. Therefore, if you need your email address changed at any time, please email Jim McKane providing him with your old and new email address as well as a list of provinces/districts in which your submissions will be found.

French Accent Characters

I have been asked, "How do I type a letter E with an acute accent?" Well, there are several methods. If you are typing a lot of French or a language which requires accents, you can change your computer keyboard to the language of your choice.

However, if you are like most of us who only need to enter special characters once in a while, it is probably easier to use Alt Codes. To type an Alt Code, you simply hold the Alt key while you type the number on your numeric keypad. Click here for a chart of Alt Codes.

Have fun!

Visitors from 95 Countries

Since CanadianHeadstones.com began, we have had visitors from 95 countries around the world! In the month of June, we had visitors from 30 countries!

I find this interesting as we tend to think that our efforts are only servicing people from Canada or maybe North America when in fact the whole world is watching our progress.

I am sure that as our database grows so will the number of visitors from foreign countries.

Have a Great Day!

Find an Ontario Cemetery

Very often we have problems locating a cemetery accurately. A user, Allison Nelson, has advised me that every cemetery in Ontario must be registered and licensed with the Province. Therefore, the Province maintains a complete database of licensed cemeteries which can be searched online at http://tinyurl.com/3ydeudz
This database is no doubt our most accurate method of pinpointing any cemetery in Ontario.

Thanks, Allison!

Cemetery Entrance, Gate, Landscape Photos & Plot Maps

It has been brought to my attention that many volunteers do not realize that we also archive photos of the entrance, gate, landscape and buildings of cemeteries. These are added in a special format and should be sent directly to myself, Jim McKane. Please send any history and address/location information available as well.

Also, we are interested in posting plot maps of cemeteries so long as they contain information which is useful to researchers. Again, please send them to me.

Thanks so much for your continued support of our project,
Jim McKane, Administrator

Growing Pains

Well, it seems that in some places we have outgrown the software! The original software was not designed to handle as many records as we are creating in some counties. This over-growth created a problem in the larger counties when attempting to create the page listing all surnames.

Therefore, we have removed the link in the header, Surnames.

If you wish to check for a surname, simply use the normal Search feature by placing the First letter of the desired Surname in the search field.

We hope you won't mind this tiny change.

Congratulations to EVERYONE who contributed to Ontario as there are now over 50,000 records indexed! What a great achievement for all!

Duplicate Photos, Clearer Photos, Corrections

Please check the database for your cemetery before beginning an upload! We are beginning to find duplicates in some areas.

If you have a clearer photo of a headstone, please send it with a note to your coordinator or myself.

If you see a correction that is required, again, please notify either your coordinator or myself.

These precautions will assist us in maintaining our high quality standards.

A Record Performance! and a Challenge!

It is not often that one meets a volunteer like shoutfromthegutter, which is her email-name!

About ten years ago she had a relative from Europe visit who wanted to visit the older cemeteries and photograph them. This got her hooked! The first few years she was only photographing the attractive and older stones; then she began uploading them to another website; by this time she was completely addicted to photographing as many stones as possible and getting them on line.  Most have been in the Etobicoke, Toronto, North York, Mississauga and Scarborough area as no one was taking pics of stones in this area.

Over the last year people started to steal her work from the website, claim it for themselves, and repost everything elsewhere so she stopped sharing her valuable work .  Then in January, she found CanadianHeadstones.com, which caters directly to Canadians and Canadian Headstones. Here she says, "I can post my work, not worry about people copying my work, and reposting it as theirs, then leaving nasty messages on my memorials. Your site is a true Encyclopaedia of stones that people can go through, and I like it."

To date shoutfromthegutter has, single-handed, added over 8,600 of the 9,200 entries for York County alone! Very soon, CanadianHeadstones.com will have over 10,000 records for York County, which will be the largest compilation of headstone records for York County anywhere on the web.

Of course, all of this would not be possible without the coordinators in the background approving all of the entries. Thank you, Coordinators!

And now, the challenge is out there!  Who else can produce this volume in their area?

Possibly, someone already has? If you think you are close, please let me know - jamckane[at]gmail.com

Cemetery Names with a PLUS (+)

A number of users have asked, "What is the Plus (+) sign in the cemetery name?"

As explained in the Help & FAQ, the Plus (+) indicates there are photos of the cemetery entrance, gate, building, or landscape available for viewing. To locate them, simply do a search using the beginning of the cemetery name. i.e. Highland Road Cemetery - search for Highland or Highland Road

Photos of the cemetery entrance, gate, building, or landscape should be forwarded directly to myself at - jamckane[at]gmail.com

Happy Viewing, thanks to everyone who has submitted these photos!

NEW Search Features

We have added two new search features to the site. You can now -

Find records within - a whole province/territory OR just one county/region/district/rural municipality

Where the - surname, first name, cemetery or comments / transcription section

Either - starts with, contains or sounds like..........the text you enter.

The ability to search for text in the comments/transcription section has been a most wanted feature.

Congratulations to our website programmers!!

Advertising Revenue - Further Comment

My comments regarding revenue DOES NOT in any way mean the future of CanadianHeadstones.com is of any concern. It is just that being on a modest retirement income, I really do not wish to subsidize it too heavily.

Please do not click on ads for the sake of revenue. However, please notice them and patronize the advertisements of interest.

CanadianHeadstones.com will live forever, if I and my key helpers have anything to say about it!

Sunday, April 25, 2010

Advertising Revenue

CanadianHeadstones.com is a very low-budget show which only requires cash for internet services and some minor expenses. No one, and I mean, NO ONE, receives any remuneration for their work or expenses.

While advertisements on a website are somewhat of an annoyance, we do need some income. Adsense provides us with this revenue. However, current revenues are lagging expenses.

Therefore, it is important that you patronize our advertisers as you see fit and let them know - "I saw your ad on CanadianHeadstones.com"

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE !! 50,000 Records !!

Congratulations to EVERYONE!! We have reached the 50,000 mark in record time!

In just 10 months, YOU, the volunteers, have helped produce one the most successful genealogy websites in Canada!

It is only 11 months ago when I first envisioned this idea and began planning a possible website for the whole of Canada. I contacted a number of my good genealogy friends as a sounding board and the idea grew from there. I/we had no idea how successful it would become, nor what support we would receive.

All that said, we are heading into the summer months when I suspect the volume of submissions will increase along with the better weather across Canada. Therefore, I implore everyone to keep scouting for new volunteer coordinators as we will need extra help very soon.

Again, thanks again for your support,

Sincerely,
Jim McKane

Coordinator Volunteers Needed

Hello Everyone - CanadianHeadstones.com has been far more successful than originally anticipated! Of course, this is thanks to a wonderful  group of volunteers who have been submitting and approving the photos.

We are quickly closing in on the 50,000 records. All of this has been accomplished in less than ten months! Of course, we expect volumes will increase as the better weather is fast approaching.

In order to handle this increase, we will need several more coordinators to approve submissions. A coordinator simply proofreads the entries and marks them "approved."  It is not difficult. You are not committed for a long-term. If you become unable to continue or overloaded, we will supply relief and assistance.

Please contact Jim at jamckane@gmail.com

Volunteering is OUR Heart!! YOU make the Difference!!

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?"

The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die!"

"Son," the man said, "don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can't make a difference!" After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish, and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said......

"I made a difference for that one!"

Submitting Photos

Just a little reminder for Newbies.........please read our Help & FAQ page before submitting your photos.

This will be of GREAT assistance to our coordinators who work diligently to approve your entries. The more errors.......the more work for them........and the slower the process.

Thanks so much,
Jim

Welcome to the CanadianHeadstones Blog

Welcome to the CanadianHeadstones.com blog!

To date, we have made a fantastic beginning at indexing headstone photos!

All of our volunteers are to be congratulated and thanked for their endless hours. We are rapidly approaching 33,000 entries indexed since July 1st, 2009 - in just a little over 7 months, we have gone from ZERO to 33,000 entries.

My heartful thanks to everyone,

Jim McKane
